It's about an hour until the Academy Awards! I remember last year's was kind of disappointing (probably has something to do with the disappointing movies that came out in 2008). This year was a bit better. So here are my predictions and then which movies
I would have picked! Don't forget to watch until the end; you'll see
my future employer mentioned as the assurance provider (ballot counters)!
Best original screenplay: The Hurt Locker
If I were the Academy: Up
Best Adapted Screenplay: Precious
If I were the Academy: I didn't really care for any of these, but my opinion might have changed if I'd seen Up in the Air...
Best Visual Effects: Avatar, clearly...
If I were the Academy: I guess I liked Avatar a little better than Star Trek, but probably only because the 3-D made it a bit more entertaining. I think I'm the only person in the world that didn't love Avatar. It was entertaining enough for a date night, but I probably wouldn't watch it again.
Best Original Song: The Princess and the Frog "Almost There"
If I were the Academy: I really hope this one wins. The movie was classic Disney, so cute, and the song was great!
Best Original Score: Avatar
If I were the Academy: Up of course! This one might win it actually...but Avatar would seem a bit more likely.
Best Directing: Precious
If I were the Academy: Eh, see "Best Adapted Screenplay" above
Best Costume Design: The Young Victoria
If I were the Academy: I hope this one gets it. I could see Coco Before Chanel winning as well. If Dr. Parnassus wins it (doubtful) I'll be mad. They're costumes were disgusting...
Best Art Direction: Avatar (kind of a no-brainer)
If I were the Academy: The Young Victoria...I'd say it was visually striking.
Best Animated Feature: Up
If I were the Academy: Up for sure, but The Princess and the Frog was great in a different way (classic Disney). If there was a runner up category, this would take it. And I think some years a runner up category is definitely needed (best picture of '39 anyone?).
Best Actress: Gabourey Sidibe in Precious
If I were the Academy: Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side
Best Supporting Actor: No idea. If I had to guess, Matt Damon in Invictus
If I were the Academy: Stanley Tucci in The Lovely Bones. He was so perfectly creepy in this role!
Best Actor: Morgan Freeman in Invictus
If I were the Academy: Colin Firth in A Single Man. Love him!
And the Academy Award for Best Picture goes to: Precious or Avatar. Yeah, yeah, I should get two predictions since they doubled the nominees this year. I'm leaning toward Avatar. I think it's the more natural Oscar choice, but it could easily go to Precious.
If I were the Academy: Up or The Blind Side. Both are great films. They're both underdogs I think, but I'll be rooting for them anyway!
There you have it! As you can see, I'm not very hopeful that many of my picks will be chosen. They hardly ever are (yes, I'm still bitter about As Good As It Gets losing to Titanic in 1997). Oh well, they're still always fun to watch regardless! Happy Oscar night everybody!
